Much as the seasons
change,
the presence of a loved one
transforms.
We are both in between.

The light through the trees
the rainbows
the stars
remind me of you.
The deer wandering through
the yard
the hummingbird whizzing
by my head
the howling of the coyotes
All so very comforting.

The ebb and flow of nature
continues
always
as does your memory
on the landscape
of my heart.

This ongoing series began when I was caretaker for my husband through his journey with ALS and continues to explore my life photographically since his death. I see this as an “In Between” time for us both. There is a catharsis to making this work and capturing these emotive moments in time, reflecting my current state of mind. It explores my ongoing feelings of loss, fear, and uncertainty, but also hope, revealing the mysterious beauty that can be found in the shadows of the life experience.

]]>With this series, I am exploring the artistic juxtaposition of visual and written expression. My inspiration is the writings of 19th and 20th century poets and writers. I am portraying my interpretation of the verses which touch upon the universal themes of nature, dreams, identity, loneliness, and spirituality. The photographs create a moment of shared recognition between the author, the viewer and myself.

]]>The photographs in this series capture the essence of the teenage experience through authentic moments in these last fleeting days of my children’s adolescence. As I document these metaphorical memories, I also explore my conflicted feelings around their imminent departure from home and the knowledge that both our worlds will be shifting into new terrains. The work celebrates the last moments of innocence, and mourns the loss of naiveté – and proximity – that will change our mother-child relationship.

The choice of black and white medium and traditional darkroom printing allows me to express these conflicting emotions. The blown out areas and the deep shadows reflect the contradictory nature and intensity of my feelings.

Vestiges of my own southern childhood filter through in the choice of locations. These photographs illustrate my view of the universal timelessness of coming of age and its effects on family.

]]>Escaping into the solitude of nature
where time stands still,
One breath to the next,
a respite for the body and the mind.

The creatures, each on their own journeys
wander nearby.
The melodies of the crickets and the frogs
resonate in their natural cadence
Oblivious to our chaos.

Can one linger here in invisibility...
disappearing into the hidden realms?
Perhaps not forever, but for a moment.

As we seek solace in the gift that is our natural world, I am conscious of the obligation to also be its guardian and caretaker.

Hidden Realms is a diaristic series that stems from my instinctive need to return to nature as a way to cope with the chaos of our current situation. My poem is inspired by some of the images and the inspiration for others.

In Hidden Realms, I inhabit lush landscapes with a mysterious cast of characters from those in their prime to ghostly apparitions. For each photograph, I use my own body, other models of all ages, hand-constructed figures, and a range of artifacts to engage with the environment.

I use a historic photographic process, wet plate collodion, to capture many of the images. It requires long exposure times and was used by our earliest photographers. Once I have the image, I turn to 21st century processes to scan it. Once captured as a digital file, I can print out in traditional ways or select other strata. I have printed on diaphanous silk banners and created an installation inviting the viewer to wander through this southern gothic haven.

]]>This series documents the world in a manner that transforms the subject into something quite different from reality. The work depicts situations, often mysterious, which draw the viewer into a narrative. In each piece, I invite the observer into this curious world. The emotions evoked are ambiguous will differ from viewer to viewer based on their own experiences.

Meet Me in My Dreams 2017-2020

]]>This series is inspired by my poem ”Meet Me in My Dreams”. The setting for many of the images is a fairytale landscape whose inhabitants are clouded in ambiguity. The ghostlike figures are reflections of the later years when beauty and youth begin to fade. They embody the feeling that one is becoming invisible and yet still present and powerful.
The work speaks to family, memory, and the ethereal passage of time.
The images are created using wet plate collodion. I scan and enlarge them to enhance the organic qualities of the medium.

Walking through the forest of my dreams
I see a varied cast of characters.
Some are known
And some are strangers.
Some are real,
Some imagined.

I catch a glimpse of something yet I look again
and nothing is there, perhaps scattered by the wind.
My eyes are tricked by the play of light
on each and every tree.
I sometimes sense I am not alone and
someone watches me.

The stories told are mine alone.
Imagination fuels my memories and my vision is revealed.
